What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is essentially a website's address on the internet. It's what you type into the search bar of your browser to visit a website. For example, "google.com" or "rippahosting.com.au" are domain names.

How it Works:

  • Every device that connects to the internet has a unique IP address (a numerical string), such as 192.168.1.1. However, remembering and typing these long numbers would be impractical for users.
  • Domain names act as a more user-friendly substitute for these IP addresses. For example, instead of typing a series of numbers to reach Google, you simply type google.com.
  • The process of converting a domain name (like google.com) into its corresponding IP address is managed by a system known as DNS (Domain Name System). When you enter a domain name in your browser, DNS servers translate it to the appropriate IP address, allowing your browser to find and display the website.

In short, domain names serve as memorable and easy-to-type addresses that connect us to specific websites on the vast internet network.
